What is a name wheel?

A name wheel, also known as a name circle, is a tool used to aid in the creative process of generating a new name for something. The idea behind the wheel is that combining two words can help to create a novel title or phrase. By rotating two circularly arranged words around each other, it is possible to come up with interesting and unique combinations. Name wheels are frequently used by branding experts and designers who need to create unique names for companies, products, or services.

To use a name wheel, both the vertical and horizontal word lists need to be filled out first. These lists should contain nouns and/or adjectives that are relevant to the project at hand. For example, if one was creating names for a company that makes outdoor furniture, they would likely use words such as "deck", "patio", and "lounge" on their list. Once these lists have been completed, it is then possible to start rotating between the two words in order to come up with interesting combinations.

When using a name wheel for creative purposes it is important not to take too long deliberating over each combination as this can cause creative blocks and limit further creativity processes. However, it can be beneficial to jot down ideas during the rotation process in case a useful combination comes about – this can then be used as inspiration for further ideas later on. Additionally taking a break from the brainstorming process between tools can also help refresh minds and introduce new ways of thinking into the collaboration session again.
